A fun zombie/war film!
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When I first saw this film I was very surprised with how good it actually is! The trailers do NOT do this film justice! While not a perfect movie by any means, it's a very fun and thrilling movie with some truly unsettling and disturbing moments. There are lots of practical effects, the music is well done, and the acting for the most part is great! This 4K Blu-Ray is sourced from a 2K DI like most Paramount releases, but the image quality is solid with good HDR! There aren't that many bonus features which is a real bummer, but for the price I would recommend this movie!

B-movie Horror at its best
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overlord is a movie that knows what it is but still manages to be higher quality than most b-movie horrors. 4k makes some scenes stand out fairly well like the opening sequence and some later battle scenes. Packaging is fairly standard, all in all good purchase.

A Thrilling Twist on the Zombie Apocalypse
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Here’s the thing about Overlord: I saw the trailer so many times I felt like I knew the movie back to front before I even walked in. It was one of those things where I’d notice something different or pick up on something new every time I saw the trailer to the point that when I realized the actual feature was opening this weekend it wasn’t that I didn’t necessarily care to see it, but I definitely felt indifferent about buying a ticket to a movie I didn’t expect to gain anything more from that I hadn’t already been conditioned to expect from the trailer. I tell this aspect of the story to lend a little perspective on why Overlord then ultimately came to be something of a pleasant surprise. In expecting a certain level of craft, care, and creativity I low-balled my expectations and was more than happy to find out I was wrong when the film kicked off and immediately kicked into high gear with a level of energy that was infectious. Stranger even, the opening of the film is the same scene that opens the trailer, but while there is the expectation of this being a full feature rather than a short preview there is also something to the altered pacing, musical accompaniment, and/or character dynamics that immediately plays into the level of investment one is willing to give no matter how much they think they know. This is a long way of getting around to saying that, despite the initial indifference through which it had to battle, Overlord is a movie that does very well at what it's built to do. It’s not an exceptional film that says something new or even anything terribly interesting about life or the psychology each of us project on its meaning, but as a movie that sets out to combine the terror of war with the terror of a zombie apocalypse and roll those into a somewhat hackneyed, but fully aware camp fest-Overlord accomplishes everything it could hope to and then some.

Excellent Dolby Atmos Sound
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overlord's Dolby Atmos soundtrack can be summarized in a single word: bonkers. The track is a delight of sonic mayhem, stage expansion and extension, potent bass, and intensely and insanely fun full-stage saturation. Every action scene is a delight, cranking up the sonic mayhem and making full use of every speaker in the configuration, including the subwoofer, to paint a chaotic picture of wartime insanity. Right from the outset on the plane full of paratroopers, the track struts its stuff, which includes engine hum and interior rattle and eventually features bullets ripping through the plane's bottom half, explosions popping all around the aircraft, screaming men, all variety of wartime chaos that the track introduces and executes with startling precision, placement, and clarity. Such holds true for every shootout throughout the film and particularly in the film's climactic action scene. Every inch of the stage is filled with perfectly defined and carefully placed sound details that instantly and fully draw the listener into the battles and environments, where every shot, scream, crash, bang, and bullet slam find their proper, harmoniously balanced place. Overhead speakers are mostly folded in rather than discretely used, though some loudspeaker announcements do offer some nice and obviously positioned overhead usage. "Reserved" is not in this track's vocabulary, though lighter support effects do help better define various scenes when the action isn't front-and-center. Musical clarity and stage saturation are terrific and dialogue is clear and detailed from its natural front-center position. This is a reference quality track from start to finish.
