A fun zombie/war film!
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When I first saw this film I was very surprised with how good it actually is! The trailers do NOT do this film justice! While not a perfect movie by any means, it's a very fun and thrilling movie with some truly unsettling and disturbing moments. There are lots of practical effects, the music is well done, and the acting for the most part is great! This 4K Blu-Ray is sourced from a 2K DI like most Paramount releases, but the image quality is solid with good HDR! There aren't that many bonus features which is a real bummer, but for the price I would recommend this movie!

A Genre Exercise at its Finest
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Here’s the thing about Overlord: I saw the trailer so many times I felt like I knew the movie back to front before I even walked in. It was one of those things where I’d notice something different or pick up on something new every time I saw the trailer to the point that when I realized the actual feature was opening this weekend it wasn’t that I didn’t necessarily care to see it, but I definitely felt indifferent about buying a ticket to a movie I didn’t expect to gain anything more from that I hadn’t already been conditioned to expect from the trailer. I tell this aspect of the story to lend a little perspective on why Overlord then ultimately came to be something of a pleasant surprise. In expecting a certain level of craft, care, and creativity I low-balled my expectations and was more than happy to find out I was wrong when the film kicked off and immediately kicked into high gear with a level of energy that was infectious. Stranger even, the opening of the film is the same scene that opens the trailer, but while there is the expectation of this being a full feature rather than a short preview there is also something to the altered pacing, musical accompaniment, and/or character dynamics that immediately plays into the level of investment one is willing to give no matter how much they think they know. This is a long way of getting around to saying that, despite the initial indifference through which it had to battle, Overlord is a movie that does very well at what it's built to do. It’s not an exceptional film that says something new or even anything terribly interesting about life or the psychology each of us project on its meaning, but as a movie that sets out to combine the terror of war with the terror of a zombie apocalypse and roll those into a somewhat hackneyed, but fully aware camp fest-Overlord accomplishes everything it could hope to and then some.

Great genre combo film
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overlord is one of the better hybrid horror films in memory, trailing perhaps only From Dusk Till Dawn in its level of fun. Important to note, that by "hybrid" I'm not including "seamless" films, such as, say, Aliens, where action permeates the entire film, but those movies, such as the aforementioned From Dusk Till Dawn, that suddenly "switch gears". Where Dusk goes from a typical Tarantino-esque small time gangster film to a vampire buffet in its second act, Overlord likewise has a point where a World War 2 film goes to a "near" zombie film. But, these aren't zombies, as the previews left many believing. These are more along the lines of Captain America super-soldiers gone horrifically wrong. (Although the serum being used does bring the dead back to life). While the second half of Overlord may not be quite as successful as its opening act, it's because that first half is SO effective that any small failures can be overlooked. Because, that introduction and ensuing story is among some of the better WW2 story-telling we've had in some time. The opening scene itself is a spectacle second only to the opening moments of Saving Private Ryan. And from those beginnings through the soldiers' trek, the characterization is top-notch, with viewers developing a relationship with the soldiers as they head off towards their mission. It's that relationship with the characters that keeps things moving when we have a stumble here and there with the monsters. Those stumbles are more a result of a budget, but even some dialogue explaining some of what we've been exposed to in the laboratory would have been welcome. There's some missed opportunities in the latter half, but nothing that makes the film fall apart or kill the enjoyment. Definitely a fun film to add to your library.

Actually a very good movie.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I went into this movie with tempered expectations. However, left genuinely impressed. The story itself is rather straight forward; nothing too complex. That's okay for a movie like this. If you don't mind the blood/gore and occasional tension, then you'll have no problem watching this. Where this movie REALLY shines however, is in its A/V department. The 4K UHD disc provides exceptional video clarity and detail. Colors pop out when they need too, nice rich blacks that aren't washed out. Video - 5/5. Audio - is on an entirely different world. The LFE especially is particularly chest pounding and deep. Atmos and surround effects are detailed and well balanced with voice/dialogue crystal clear and easy to understand. I highly, highly recommend this movie.

A great, under appreciated horror gem
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overload for me was a rare treat. A movie that I enjoyed from the opening frames of the classic Paramount logo all the way until the enjoyable ending. While the movie was sold in some markets as a Zombie movie, Overlord has much more in common with the core plot of the Wolfenstein video games. It is still a horror movie but it is more of a mix of science fiction and supernatural than most Zombie movies are. If you are looking for horror movie that takes chances and tries some different things you will likely enjoy Overlord. I have seen a view reviewers rate Overload poorly due to historical inaccuracies that exist in the film. While I understand the frustration I have a hard time marking down a horror film for being historically inaccurate when one of the core plot threads of the film is fighting undead super soldiers which I am pretty sure is also historically inaccurate. :)
