Q: does this have a built in mic or just the external wired one?

A: The Pioneer DMH-W4600NEX has an external microphone on a wire about 10 feet long or so for easy and flexible installation. The microphone is typically installed on the headliner near the vehicle's rear- view mirror where it can "hear" the user very clearly. Installation locations can vary for best results in any given vehicle. This microphone is used for hands free phone calls as well as all communication with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This receiver does not include a built-in microphone.
