Vic, These are excellent questions. Don't know if I am truly qualified to answer them, but I do use have and used both a Roku extra and a Roku soundbar. If you should decide to go with the soundbar, I would make sure it comes with the Roku software built in. That's what I got, and I don't know if you can get the soundbar without the Roku software. Next the soundbar replaces the Roku extra so you can just transfer the Roku extra to another TV should you wish to. Next the Roku soundbar becomes the "driver" of your TV so you access your cable provider through Roku soundbar, just as you do now with the extra. Once installed the soundbar works just like your extra so there is no real learning curve involved. One detail - you will need to go through the full Roku install process on the soundbar, just as you did with the extra. ie. install all the apps you want to use and set each one up, username and password to get them to work, but like your extra you should only have to do this once for each app the Roku soundbar will remember the login info and provide it to the app for you thereafter. Upon using the soundbar you will quickly find the greatly improved sound quality and dynamic range of the soundbar. I run mine without the optional subwoofer, the sound bar provides that great a range. I decided the subwoofer was unnecessary, but that is a personal preference.
