Yes & no. You can choose not to use a microphone, but that will limit what you do with this unit. For example, you could bluetooth pandora, or spotify, without a microphone, by connecting the phone to the unit wirelessly. However, in order to get the most out your purchase, you will want to use the microphone and plug your iphone into the unit. Then the receiver BECOMES your phone and it does lots of great things! you can use waze, maps, siri, etc. Have no fear about the microphone- it comes with the unit and is installed as part of the installation process.
