“I dont have a media room and not really sure how effective these 5.1 surround systems are in a living room. If someone has installed this in their living room, could you please advise how good the sound effects are in a open layout living room?”

I also have a weird, open layout living room . Fortunately I am able to put my sofa against a wall and able to place it directly across from my TV. since that is my primary location to watch movies and play video games I set up the rear surround speakers on either end of the sofa facing towards the middle seat. and it sounds super good. In no way am I an audiophile but I do pay attention to good sound detail and this absolutely fits the bill. I went through four other setups from Best Buy before I picked this Yamaha. even if you only utilize the front three channels with subwoofer and not the rear surround, the sound of that you get far outstrips any of the Soundbar setups you can buy at the similar price point.
