“The closest I get to surround sound is the DSP setting for "5 channel stereo". It sounds good but not like true 5.1 Dolby Digital. I mostly watch the cable TV box and Netflix/Vudu movies on the built in TV apps. How do I get the 5 speakers sounding best?”

Try using the included mike sensor to calibrate you room and speakers. It’s a must! I have a similar setup. 5.1 sounds great for movies and shows that took the time in sound engineering. Google it!
