I am planning to hook this up to a Mac Mini to use with piano software. I am hoping to place it on my electric piano without the stand. i have read the buttons are on the bottom so would this prevent it from sitting flat without the stand attached? null

I do think that the placement of the buttons would prohibit it from sitting flat, the power button is a bit raised up, and it would most likely not be very balanced but if you are leaning it backwards a bit it might work

I am sitting at the monitor right now looking at it and it would most likely fall over. The buttons protrude slightly and there is a slight recess behind the buttons that contain a vent.

That's true - you will need to use the stand. Also there is no remote so you need access to the buttons to make any changes, like volume.
