If it's powerful enough to game with, then it should be fine for college. I find the lighted keyboard very useful. It is compact, but not light weight. It really depends on what you plan to do with it. Some universities have very specific IT requirements. Wish I had this laptop when I was in college.

It's called a gaming laptop be cause it has high enough processing power and a good enough graphics card to play video games. Video games are notorious for requiring high specification machines and lag if your computer isn't powerful enough. That said, if it can run games, it can do anything you throw that it.
