I believe the vive requires a gtx 1060 or higher, you would probably be better off getting a desktop computer. You can technically run the vive with it but it wouldnt support any games correctly.

My suggestion is to look back if someones selling a 980M laptop. Before moving to the 10 series of Nvidia laptop graphics cards Desktop to laptop were lesser. So when you hear the requirements of a desktop at the 970 GTX for HTV Vive "minimum requirements" it means a 980 M more than likely will be minimum requirements to functionally use your HTV Vive mobile. The 1070 graphics card + in laptops will run you 1500 USD + easily just to tell you. I am sorry to bum you out but there isn't a VR ready laptop on the market below that price point.

The lowest they recommend is GTX 1060, but the GTX 1050Ti is able to run VR, albeit not at any comfortable framerate. Your son will definitely get headaches and motion sickness from extensive VR usage with the GTX 1050Ti.
