I am not 100% certain your setup, but based on what you provided when you first hook everything up, I believe you have to set the volume up to a middle or higher than middle volume for the input starting point. You are most likely setting/calibrating the apple volume too low effectively not within the proper input range to work correctly. I suggest you restart everything but make sure to increase your Apple volume before programming them to work together.
