“I purchased this router and told it would replace the Verizon DSL box I have. However my old routers yellow cord is plugged into the Verizon box. I only have a lap top so didn't really want to plug it into laptop since I don't want to be connected to cord”

Well, it is a modem/router with wireless. So you plug your yellow cord into this and activate the wireless for your laptop. No need to use any of the router ports if you don't want to. That is true for any modem/router with wireless capability, not just this one. You might need to hardwire your laptop during the setup for wireless, but then you can unplug.
