“Is there a way to turn the mic volume down separately from your hearing volume? If I turn the volume button down so that I don’t blow out the ears of the person on the other end I have a hard time hearing what they’re saying.”

You can potentially adjust your microphone (output) and headphone (input) volume with whatever device you are connected to. Windows & MacOS support this. New iPhones also can. Android phones require a 3rd-party app, of which there are a number available.
