“will it work through shower walls that are plastic? I think when I moved in they just patched up a hole over the shower top without checking for mold (lazy help) Now I am having medical problems and can't even use the shower without getting sick and dizzy”

The monitor will ideally be placed in a location where there is a possibility for mold to grow. It does not have a mold spore sensor, rather it calculates the risk for mold based on the temperature and humidity of the location it is placed in.
