“Will the extra M.2 slot only accept 2280 PCIE M.2s or is it backwards compatible with M.2 SATA, like the ones used in the original Alienware 15. I know some of the newer MSI gaming laptops support both PCIE and SATA in the extra slots?”

This system supports only PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe interface.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, the m.2 SATA is compatible in the NVMe slot on the Alienware m17 r3. The reason being is that the M and/or B keys will fit into the notches on the slot. This information was double-checked on Dells website prior to submitting but please double-check yourself.
