“does this unit come embedded with GPS? or do you have to have your phone with you to have gps? the reason I ask is I drive a lot of places that don't have cell signal and id like to still have gps access”

as others state, there's no built-in Nav software. However, since iOS 12 you can use Google Maps on Carplay, along with its offline map capability. So, if you are out of cell signal, you can still navigate with a previously downloaded map of the area you are in.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.This is a great unit. Without your phone you get radio only. All functions work via your iPhone. Car play mirrors the screen of your phone. And car play Siri assists with making calls and sending texts. If you forget your phone, you only get radio. Hope that helps.

You must use your iPhone's GPS app, Apple Maps, although I believe that support for other maps apps was recently (or soon will be) added. The unit does connect to a GPS antenna, but that is used only to boost your phone's GPS signal. So, unfortunately, no cell signal, no GPS.
