“How well does it read c.d.'s. And what is the quality of the sound?”

It reads CDs well, no issue there. The sound quality is fair at best. Older CDs and CDs with old music don't sound good at all. Newer CDs and those with recent, digitally created/recorded music sound better but still not all that great. It gets a C for CD sound playback quality.
