The width between the legs is 19.5 inches and the table top where the laptop would sit is just over 20 inches. I don't think it would be effective sitting it in top of your legs.

i leave the legs folded, and rest it on my lap. It is not uncomfortable resting it on my lap this way. I bought it, primarily, for the fan.

When legs open, distance between them is around 18". I find the laptop almost sits too high over my lap, with the legs open. I just keep them stowed, and rest it on my lap.

It depends somewhat on how you have it set up but I’d say 19 inches at the bottom, which is the widest portion (the legs angle slightly). I think you would not have a problem if you had to have it partially on the side of your legs, but if it were on the top of your legs, I don’t think it would be very stable.
