It does need wifi connection. Device does not have an Ethernet connection. It also does not store music. Instead it communicates with your various streaming services that you have. So for example, I can ask the echo to play music from my Spotify. The only other option for music would be from my library on my phone.

It needs Wi-Fi and internet access to setup. You can select music from Pandora, Spotify, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, and Amazon Music. Nothing is downloaded. It's streamed from these services directly.
