• yes, for the most part. You can use the app for additional features but most of the things you do you'll never have to go to the computer

• You don't need anything, once it's connected to your home network (with internet access)... You just talk to it... However, some of the "Skills" that Echo has, require using either the app, or a browser to set up, and you need to keep both handy, for updates and connecting to bluetooth devices...
