Not true. The DOT is a stand alone unit. It is identical to the full size ECHO in functionality and connectivity. The only difference is the size and speaker system. The full size ECHO has multiple speakers for better sound. I use my Bose bluetooth speakers connected to the DOT for great quality sound when streaming music.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It can be used on its own. I have three dots, all work together seamlessly. I can control all functions in all rooms from anyone of them. The only difference between the DOT and the full size ECHO is the speaker system. The full size has 360 degree sound and the DOT has a single speaker. It is not bad. I connect my bluetooth speakers to is and the sound is as good as your speakers. To me, it was not worth the extra $130 for the speaker system on the full size ECHO. The DOT is great and is identical in everyway except sze and speakers! I love it!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The Echo Dot will work as a stand alone. That is what I did. I have a UE Boom speaker which is a couple of years old and I connected it to my Echo Dot via Bluetooth. It's basically the same thing as the Amazon Echo.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This is from CNET review of the dot. Chip off the old block Like the name suggests, the Echo Dot is a smaller version of the smart speaker that came before it -- so much so that you can hardly call it a speaker at all. Essentially, it's just the top inch and a half of the original Echo, with the full-size speaker squished down into something much smaller and much less powerful. Same thing just smaller, no you do not need both. Cheers.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I have the 2nd generation Echo Dot and it works independently on its own.
