“What is this device for? It seems to me, that for 10 bucks more, you can buy the Echo Dot and have a device with a BUILT-IN speaker. Please help, because if this device has some unique features not available on the other Echo devices, I'd like to know”

I can tell you how I use mine. Not sure if that will help you or not. I use this as input to a powered speaker that I already had using the aux cable that came with it. Could also connect using Bluetooth if your speaker allows. Mine didn’t so I use the cable. The speaker I already had has a much better sound than the small echo dot speaker I assume as it is a larger speaker. Hope this helps.

I have it plugged into my surround sound system out side and have it play music though those speakers and also in the house with my connected Alexa devices.

So it makes my surround sound an Alexa We use it to play music without all the commercials We can listen to what we want, when we want!! Got it before Christmas when they were $10. Def worth the investment for us. We LOVE our music!!

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The size. Removing the speaker gives you a super thin Echo. This can hide in places that a traditional Dot will stick out. In the app it says that it wants a speaker, but I have it using a Dot in the next room for the voice responses.

If you are going to connect it always to a speaker or sound system it doesn't make sense that you purchase the dot with speakers. Is cheaper slimiest with all the functionality of the DOT. I do agree that the price on sale should be the retail price.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.If you can get a Dot for $25, it makes sense to do that. As for as I can tell this thing is a Dot without a speaker. I bought one to play around with in my truck using my phone's hotspot for internet connection. It works sometimes, drops connection a lot. Recently got a Echo Auto to test for them prior to release by Amazon. It works pretty well, again using you phone's data as I tried with the echo. I now use the Input to run Bluetooth speaker outside.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.So basically this is, literally and figuratively, a slimmed down version of the dot with significantly less functionality (no speaker). Not having a speaker makes this device practically useless, and defeats the purpose of having a an interactive device you can talk to. As we all know, with the current Echo Dot, you verbalize a command, and it answers you! I can't figure out why Amazon would make a device that's one step backwards. For another $10.00, you'll have a device that's far more versatile.
