“Does the bulb need the Phillips Hue bridge to work? Or can it work off the echo?”

If you have an Echo plus, you do not need the Philips Hue Bridge, as it has built in “smart hub”. If you buy any other version, you will need the hub.

Nope, the Phillips Hue bulbs will work without the bridge so that will save you some money

My ECHO PLUS works with Phillips Hue Light bulbs without hub. GE plugs require a SmartThings HUB.

It will work off your Echo I assume because it works off my Echo Show just fine.

It will work being turned off and on without a hub or bridge. However, if you want to set a schedule to turn it off and on at different times automatically you will need a bridge. The Hue app will scan for a bridge and unless you have one it will not let you continue. This is only if you want to use another app such as WINK to set a schedule. ON and OFF by the echo plus. If you have only an Echo I think you will need a hub or bridge.
