• You can download the Alexa app on a smartphone, in order to link or “learn” other app functionality such as Spotify or Netflix. Alexa works on its own though, it’s just a voice-command for doing tasks. But you can expand it’s functionality through linking to other services. For instance, if you have a Prime account, you can get Real-time shipping updates, such as if a package was delivered, can set up shopping lists, or play music through a linked Spotify account.

• No, you do not have to purchase a membership, but it adds a lot more if you do purchase a subscription or membership, because there is just so much more you can do such as listen to music from Amazon Prime, watch movies, and many other things.
