I haven’t done anything with mine. I suppose that it would say if it needed anything. So my answer is NO, it does not need monthly service. I just reread the question, OF COURSE YOU NEED INTERNET SERVICE. or let it hook up with your phone. But NO, you can’t just take it out of the box in the middle of nowhere and expect it to work
