Only if you want to play music without using bluetooth thru your phone, I pad etc.

No monthly charge to have Alexa...it is a great item...worth every penny!

To use Amazon music you have to subscribe to it, there are other free options like iHeartRadio and Pandora.

Good afternoon, in reference to the question that you ask the answer is no. The only thing you will need is Internet and Wi-Fi. It happens to be a magnificent device
