ABC Mouse runs well on my son's 'Kindle Fire HD Kid's Edition - the previous generation, not the newest 2018 version. Especially since you're looking for longterm, I'd recommend getting the the Fire HD Kid's edition.

We have been through a few different kinds of tablets over the years between my now 7 year old and my older children and the Fire has lasted the longest and now the Kids Fire seems to be the most versatile. Amazon Kids comes with it and is amazing for all kinds of kid friendly apps and ebooks. Far worth the investment.
