Yes you can save apps or most any files to the microSD card. The 16 GB version has about 11 GB of free space.

Only some apps can be saved to the SD card. In my experience with Fire tablets, most apps will install themselves to the internal memory and don't give an option as to where you want them installed to. If you plan to install a large number of larger apps, you should get the 32GB tablet. Most Android apps are small, though, (5-15mb) so there is quite a bit of internal storage in the 16gb tablet if you are a casual user of the device and not going to do a lot of downloading of apps.
