What do I need to record shows or movies null

You don't need to record them anymore because once they are available, they are always there. They don't go away.

Attached external HD via USB port at the back of Fire TV

This is not possible to record off a box like this

You don't record. It's streams on demand whenever you like. No need to store large amounts of video.

Just simply locate a show and "add it to my shows". The DVR is automatic.

Everything is streamed you don't need to record anything. Unless you specifically want to record over broadcasting with antenna which it would not do. This is not a DVR

Other than sling tv there is no need to record movies as the movies are always available whenever you want. Just select the movie you want and start watching pause it if you like or go backwards.
