It's an 9nline streaming device. You can purchase various apps like SlingTV if you are trying to go cable free but it will not work your cable in lieu of a cable box.

If you subscribe to certain shows it can take place of DirecTV as long as you have internet high-speed I can go online and see what packages are available and their prices before switching from Direct

No, not unless you like dated content through Amazon and are willing to pay for subscription services such as Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus, Netflix etc. Check out third party software apps like KODi

Essentially it could. I would recommend keeping or switching to an internet provider considering that is necessary. (duh) Besides the usual Netflix, Hulu, HBO GO, Showtime, Amazon Prime and so forth there are certain apps that can be added after market with a simple google search.

Yes, especially if you get PlayStation Vue and Amazon Prime. Depending on what level of Direct-TV you have you might save a lot each month. If you have PlayStation Vue in your area, it will give you all of the channels you need from Direct TV. You may not get all of the local news shows. It depends on your market area. Here is Pheonix, I get Fox, but don't get the local ABC, CBS or NBCnews. You get all of the ABC, CBS or NBC shows on demand, but you don't get the local news. 

Amazon Prime gives you a decent number of movies, but it's not like NetFlix. Of course you will have easy access to your NetFlix account directly through this device.

This depends on how well you like live television. You are able to stream lot of content with the firestick like Netflix, buy movies or tv shows, and also get music. You can also purchase certain channels from some solid applications like sling tv. It's a monthly cost but you will get the main channels people like. This lowers your cable bill.
