It depends on the app. Some apps ask you if your still there first before it either gives you the screen saver or just turns off.

Thank you for your question. Yes you can change this feature here are the steps from the home screen:
1.Go to Settings  on your Fire TV.
2.Select Display & Sounds.
3.Select Ambient Experience.
4.Select Ambient preferences.
5.Select Advanced Settings.
6.Select 
     a. Ambient Experience Start to adjust how long the device must be inactive before the Ambient Experience launches automatically.
     b. Ambient Experience Timeout to adjust how long the device must be inactive before the Ambient Experience times out.
7.Select the new duration.
