“HBO GO and Sling TV App's I know these features will not be available until spring 2015 for the Fire Stick. My question is if I buy this Fire Stick now (Jan 2015) would I be able to get some type of software update to get these additional features once they are available?”

Sling TV is available now but only supports a few of the sling models. Both features you want are applications so you are able to install without an update.
