“Can the backlight on this kindle be turned completely off to save battery life?”

Hello Lisa, Yes, there is a brightness setting that you can turn all the down so that it looks like a page in a book with no back light. And when you turn the brightness up, it looks more like a backlit tablet, I hope this information helps, have a great day!
