“Does the WHITE Paperwhite (as compared with the BLACK model) make it more difficult to read and focus on the black lettering of text? IOW, is the white frame so BRIGHT that it interferes with reading (and is too "glaring") like when read in a dark room?”

No it doesn't. The white frame isn't shiny at all. I haven't found it difficult to read versus the black version at all.

Haven't read the white in direct sunlight so don't know about glaring but I don't think you would have a problem with glaring since it's matte finished. As for night you can turn down the brightness. It's awesome at night.
