“Is the screen "smudges" at the bottom a defect? I see "smudges" at the bottom of the screen -- dark spots from the light not quite hitting evenly. This was a problem of the original Paperwhite and was fixed with Paperwhite 2nd gen. The problem's back with my 3rd gen. Should I just live with it, or is this a defect for which I should get a replacement?”

It has to be a defect get it replaced I don't have this problem.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The LED "shadows" are not unusual and can be minimized not eliminated by adjusting the light intensity. After using the read for a while It becomes less bothersome.

Return it only if it bothers you too much.. but I think if the book you're reading is interesting enough, this issue will fade into the background.
