• It does have backlighting. Book type ads on home page but haven't noticed any while reading.

• Yes this model has a backlight that you can adjust as needed. You will see the special offers when you turn off the kindle or let it go to sleep mode the best part is you can ignore them by just swiping your finger to turn it on of if you're interested you can click the learn more. I have to say the only adds you will see will be the daily specials on books nothing else so it's actually not irritating. Nor will you get pop ups once you've turned it on that's the best part! Hope this helps!

• Yes, the Paperwhite is lit from behind the text and is very easy on the eyes. The less expensive model has special offers, but they are not obtrusive; you simply swipe them away when you pick up the Kindle and begin to read (they don't keep popping up the way ads on a computer do).
