Just lean it up against the stand. Either vertical or horizontal. It will charge it. I’m pretty sure this doesn’t answer your question. But maybe it will help someone else.

While no physical connection is required, the phone must be within a few millimeters of the surface of the cradle. The charger does work with phones that are in protective cases. This charging system uses an oscillating magnetic field, just like rechargeble toothbrushes. It only works if the phone is placed in the cradle.
