“Does this iPad have the ability to open Microsoft documents in Word and Excel and/or is there an app that could provide this ability? I am a lifetime Microsoft user and purchasing an Apple product would be a new experience for me.”

One great thing about the Apple I pad is that the application for numbers in the apple program is not something you have to purchase. It has a great spread sheet, similar to excel, pages application is similar to your word documents and again your not paying extra fees for these programs. I use them all the time, Hope this answers your question.
