“Why does my volume buttons switch when my iPad is sideways? Like when I try to turn the volume down it goes up, or when i try to make it go up it goes down.”

This happens because you don't have orientation lock on! It is a feature meant to make the listening experience easier for the user- but it can become a bit confusing. Go to the control panel on your iPad and click the icon that looks like a lock with a circular arrow around it- that will lock your screen in either portrait or landscape mode, and therefore will lock the volume buttons too!
