“I am adding RAM to my mid 2011 iMac (4 to 8) but am being told that with this model it can mean a complete rebuild. Does anyone know if that's true - or is it just a sales pitch by the repair shop?”

I had the same model and added 8gbs of ram and it runs better than this one. I actually still have it setup and use it for heavier work. It was fairly cheap. I think I spent less that $200
