• They charge in the case. The case itself has to be charged, but I go days in between charging.

• The case itself can charge the AirPods like 3-4 times, without being connected to a MagSafe. MagSafe charges the battery imbedded in the case whenever connected

• Your earbuds should charge from the case alone. Both are independent. You can charge your earbuds with the case alone as long the case has battery charge. Hopes this helps.
