YES great question slide up onto your central control and click ear icon, once you click it it’ll give you option just click ON then you’d be able to hear everything your airpod and phone is hearing.

It’s certainly relative to your hearing levels, but I would imagine it would totally be worth it for that situation. There is a setting with the iPhone called “Live Listen” where it can be used as a microphone. In your case, you would be able to set your phone on the table closer to who you are speaking with, or even hold it a little closer to the waiter/waitress, and it will amplify the sound directly into your ear.
