I just tried and I was able to connect an Apple TV first gen as a sound bar and it sounded good!
Pressing the play/pause on remote didn’t work for me so I had to go to settings and setup airplay and chose the speaker you want as output

Yes! You can connect your Apple TV to the HomePod either by holding the play/pause button on your Siri remote and selecting HomePod as the source, or via the audio preferences slide down while viewing content.

Yes you can. And when AirPlay 2 comes out later this year, you will be able to pair 2 HomePods together for enhanced sound.

Yes, you can output sound from the Apple TV to the HomePod. Siri on the HomePod cannot control the Apple TV, however.

It does not really work well as a sound bar, you’re much better off using something that is designed for audio from a TV
