No. It can only be paired with another HomePod mini.

Even if you could, the sound presence of a Homepod is much different than that of the mini, which would be a "customer noticeable" difference. I could not imagine being able to tolerate the difference for more than 5 minutes. You would really need to manually play with the Homepod audio settings to get it as close as possible, even if it were possible.

My understanding is that the HomePod mini can only be paired to form a stereo pair with another HomePod mini not with the original HomePod.

No. Only with another HomePod Mini.

You can pair two HomePod Minis together for stereo sound but cannot pair a Mini with the regular HomePod.
