Beware of open box. I have had a lot of success with open box, however buyer beware. I just tried to buy a Microsoft Surface Pro 7 as open box. It was listed as satisfactory meaning that it would have all the required items but may be missing non-essential items. Went to pick up and it did not have a power cord. Was told that power was not an essential item since it could run off the battery. I asked them how I was to charge the battery and was told that since it could run off a battery the power cord was non-essential. 
 This was the first time I ever had an issue with open box. The worst part is I drove 40 mi round trip. I returned it and all the accessories that had purchased. I am a current Elite Member because I spend too much money at Best Buy. Guess I will head over to Amazon and buy the exact same thing and wait a day for delivery...

I wonder if there's a way to tell if the product has been on display, such as an in-store tv, or returned? Anyone know any tips or tricks. 
For a tv, a display model has probably been played for 1000s of hours. If returned, may have been unsatisfied with an aspect of the product.

sealed products which get returned to the store bcoz customer changed their mind or did not like it or any number of reason except manufacturing defect or severe damage. Those are sold as open box items. It can also include display models. These models would be used for demo purpose in the store and later would be sold at a lesser price as open box item. 
Open box items come with all the original accesories minus the manufacturers warranty. It is advisable to buy a certified product and inspect it before purchasing if possible.

It’s a product that was either returned or used as store display and does not have the original box anymore but has all original accessories included. They are sold at a reduced price.

The comments regarding open box items not having the manufactures warranty is wrong.  Open box items carry the full manufacturer warranty per Best Buy.  What is not covered is what might have caused it to be rated as less than excellent.  For instance if there was a scratch on a screen that screen is no longer warranted.

As for buying certified regarding computers one notable difference between certified and not is the diagnostics.  You can have them do this on any computer.  Under the certified more information icon it mentions cleaning and careful repackaging.  Per Geek Squad all computers are cleaned whether Excellent, satisfactory and so forth. How pretty the computer comes packed may be a matter of what of the original packing material was returned.  Don't forgo a good deal just because it's not 'Certified".

I just came across a situation that I bought an open-box iMac. I was told by the store worker that it came with one year manufacture warranty. When I checked Apple's website, however, it said the product was sold 3 years ago and coverage had expired. I spent hours talking to the customer care agent of Best Buy, and the answer was the warranty of Apple product started from the first transaction, so I did not have a warranty. This information of exclusion could not be find on BestBuy's website. Buyers be aware! The information of warranty is misleading.

I just submitted an insurance claim and the items was not covered (as it was stolen) because open box means used. Buyer beware. No credit card insurance protection.

Open box means it was bought by a customer and may or may not have been used and returned within the return window. Open box items do not guarantee the original packaging or any accessories that come with the device nor do they have full manufacturer warranty as if perfectly new. The condition of the item only refers to the item not if it’s missing any accessories or even the original packaging.

I was sold to me as new when it was open box. I was an error because how can I be wrong about this when I was price matched. Sales associate told me t had been sold as open box. I said what the heCK. I had no clue. well, it was sold as new when it was not. I wIll never buy anything agian from this DISHONEST STORE. CAN'T BE TRUSTED
