• Just go to the settings. Then to general. Then to software update. It should tell you if you have the latest version.

• Latest version is iOS 12.1. Go to Settings>General>Software Update and check if you have Automatic Updates on. If it is on and you still haven't gotten a prompt to update, turn it of and back on and that will force the iPad to check for updates. Then accept the update when the prompt pops up.
