You do not have to sign a contract As a matter of fact you can activate it on any of Tracfone's brands, Total Wireless, Straight Talk, Simple Mobile or Tracfone Wireless and pick your plan. I suggest doing chat to do this as I had luck activating it on Tracfone without their assistance, but you may encounter problems if you don't answer the questions right on the phone upgrade screen, especially if you are transferring your number from your old cell phone provider to the new one.
