An unlocked phone means that the phone will work with any major carrier. This includes but is not limited to T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T and Sprint.

When the phone is not locked with any carrier such as Verizon or T-mobile and can be used with any carrier's sim.

Unlocked means the phone can be used with pretty much every mobile carrier in the United States. If you’re not on Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint you should buy the unlocked version of the phone.
