There’s no membership required if you have an iTunes music library already. You don’t have to purchase anytthing unless you want to. If you own music already in iTunes you just sync it with the iPod through iTunes. you only purchase music or movies or other media if you want to.

No membership required. That is why I purchased this item as my grand daughter is 9 yrs old and her parents don't want her to have a regular phone yet to call anywhere. She can still call all her friends and parents and grand parents as they all have apple products. She really wanted it for all the music.
