“will this work with my apple tv plus which I have on my iPad? tried a different adapter and screen said "connected display is not authorized to play protected movies"”

I use this device with my iPhone which has the same connection as my iPad. So I assume it would work.

This Apple Lightning Connector from Best Buy will play on your TV anything you have on your Ipad. I first bought a cheaper one from Walmart and it would not support movies and Netflix and a lot of other streaming things and it was very poor screen quality. So, Apple makes you buy their pricey connector for you to get any quality and quantity onto your TV. Hope this helps.

I have used it to play Apple TV from my iPad to the tv and it works great.
